If you’re wondering what to do in Lapland, I’ve got you covered! In this blog post, I’ll share the best winter adventures, from gliding through snow-covered forests on a husky sled and speeding across frozen lakes on a snowmobile to completely unwinding while floating in an icy lake. And of course, no trip would be complete without visiting a reindeer farm and chasing the magical Northern Lights.

Lapland in winter is anything but boring! And it’s not just a destination for couples, it’s also an incredible place to explore with friends. So, keep reading to find out what to do in Lapland, how to get there, and where to book your ultimate winter adventure.

What to do in Lapland

In this blog post, I’m taking you along for the eight most exciting activities you can experience in Finnish Lapland in winter. Plus, I’ll share even more ideas if you’re looking for extra adventure. As always, you’ll also get an overview of how to get there and what this trip costs.

Husky Sledding

Husky sledding is one of those bucket-list experiences that feels straight out of a winter fairy tale. These energetic dogs are raring to go, ready to pull you through their snowy world for six unforgettable kilometers.

Before setting off, you’ll get a quick intro: how to steer and brake the sled, and how to communicate with the dogs. Then, you and a partner will pick your own team of five to six huskies – and off you go! You’ll be the one in control, feeling the power of the dogs as they race through the snow. Halfway through, you can swap places so both of you get a turn at driving. After the ride, you’ll warm up in a cozy Finnish hut with a hot cup of berry juice – the perfect way to end this adventure.

Snowmobile Tour

If you’re wondering what to do in Lapland for an unforgettable adrenaline rush, a snowmobile tour is the perfect choice. For the indigenous Sámi people, snowmobiles have transformed daily life. While they once relied on reindeer to navigate the vast snowy landscapes, many now use these powerful machines to herd their animals, get around, or simply enjoy the thrill of speeding through the Arctic wilderness.

Before you set off, you’ll get a full safety briefing on how to control and brake your snowmobile. Then, it’s time to hit the trail! You’ll share a snowmobile with a partner as you embark on a 20-kilometer ride through Lapland’s breathtaking winter landscape. Sometimes, you’ll glide smoothly over the snow, while at other times, you’ll feel the power of the engine as you tackle small hills. Halfway through, you’ll stop for a break, time to swap drivers and warm up with a hot cup of berry juice.

No driver’s license? No problem! You can still join as a passenger. Kids aged four and up can ride in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile, while older children may be able to ride as passengers with an adult, depending on the instructor’s approval.

Ice Floating

Ice floating was hands down one of the most surprising experiences of my trip to Lapland. I didn’t have huge expectations going in, but by the end, it turned out to be one of my absolute favorite activities. Imagine effortlessly floating in the icy waters of a frozen lake, yet feeling completely warm and comfortable.

For this unique experience, you’ll slip into a specially insulated dry suit that keeps you warm, dry, and, let’s be honest, makes you look a bit like a Teletubby. Then, you gently glide into the water and float on the surface, surrounded by pure Arctic stillness.

During the day, you can take in the endless snow-covered landscape around you. If you book an evening session, you might even get the chance to float beneath the magical Northern Lights.
Looking for an extra thrill? After your floating session, you can take an ice bath. It might take a bit of courage, but trust me, you’ll feel absolutely amazing afterward!

Aurora Expedition

The Northern Lights are an absolute must-see in Lapland, and witnessing them is an experience you’ll never forget. Your guide will take you to a perfect spot to catch the incredible light show in the night sky. While you wait for the lights to appear, you can cozy up by a campfire, roasting sausages or marshmallows, it’s the ideal way to soak in the calm and magic of the Arctic night.

Of course, the Northern Lights are weather-dependent and there’s no guarantee to see them but when the conditions are right, you’re guaranteed a breathtaking moment you’ll cherish forever.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing in Lapland during winter allows you to experience the beauty of nature in a truly unique way. Your guide will lead you through deep snow-covered forests, across frozen lakes, and along quiet, icy rivers. The snow-covered trees, which resemble soft marshmallows, are especially striking.

As you hike, you’ll learn about the local flora and fauna, with your guide pointing out the different aspects of nature that stand out in this time of year. It’s the perfect moment to slow down and enjoy the untouched beauty of winter.

Sleigh Ride with Rudolph

The sleigh ride and visit to the reindeer farm were definitely some of the highlights of my Lapland adventure. It was fascinating to learn more about these animals, which have lived “semi-wild” in Lapland for centuries. Each reindeer has an owner, but for most of the year, they roam freely through the forests and fields of Lapland. In winter, when the snow covers the pastures, they return near the farm to get enough food.

During this activity, you have the chance to ride in a reindeer sleigh through the snow-covered forest. Especially on clear days, this experience is truly magical, as the low winter sun casts a warm glow over the landscape, making the snow sparkle. After the sleigh ride, you get to feed your reindeer and warm up by the campfire or in a cozy wooden cabin with a cup of hot berry juice.

Skiing – Perfect for Beginners and Advanced Skiers

If you’re looking to hit the slopes in Lapland, there are several ski resorts to choose from. I visited the Ylläs Ski Resort, and it was the perfect opportunity for me to get back on the skis after a long break. What I loved most was the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, even though it was high season. There were hardly any other skiers, which made the experience even more enjoyable after all these years.

If you’re not super confident on skis or need a quick refresher, you can easily book a ski lesson for an hour. Just ask your Lapland Travel guides for options. Afterward, you can choose between a full-day lift pass or a shorter three-hour ticket (prices range from 45 to 55 euros per person). Of course, you can also rent skis, helmet, and boots—just make sure to bring your own ski goggles!

Other Winter Activities in Lapland

In addition to all the winter adventures I’ve already shared, there are even more unique activities in Lapland that you can experience with Travelbase. If you’re wondering what to do in Lapland beyond the classics, the Snow Village is a must-see. Every year, an impressive village made entirely of snow and ice is created, serving as a hotel, restaurant, and bar. Artists from around the world transform massive ice blocks into stunning sculptures, each reflecting that year’s theme. You’ll get a guided tour through this winter wonderland and can relax with a hot drink at the bar.

If you’re seeking a more traditional experience, ice fishing is a must. On a frozen lake, you’ll try your luck at catching fish with a rod and a hand auger, just like the Finns do on weekends.

Snowcycling is another fun activity, and it’s trickier than it looks! With specially designed bikes equipped with thick tires, you can cycle through the snow and enjoy the stunning winter landscape.

And if you’re wondering what to do in Lapland if you prefer something more peaceful, cross-country skiing is a great option. With 330 kilometers of groomed trails, Lapland is a true paradise for skiers. Your guide will take you along gentle routes that are perfect for beginners, allowing you to immerse yourself in the calm and vastness of the Arctic nature.

Getting to Lapland in Winter

For this trip, you’ll fly into Kittilä, right in the heart of Finnish Lapland. Conveniently, there are direct flights available from Düsseldorf and Brussels, which you can easily book through Travelbase when reserving your trip. Flight prices vary depending on the time of booking, but they’re clearly displayed during the booking process.

Accommodation during Your Winter Adventure in Lapland

On this trip, you can choose between a hotel room or staying in one of the cabins. I personally stayed in a cozy log cabin with friends, just five minutes away from the hotel. The cabin was equipped with a small kitchenette, a bathroom, and a fireplace, providing the perfect Scandinavian vibes we were hoping for on our Lapland adventure.

Breakfast and dinner are always served at the hotel, so if you opt for the cabin, it’s just a short walk to the hotel twice a day for your meals.

How is the Trip with Lapland Travel Organized?

Before your trip, you’ll receive regular updates from Lapland Travel and Travelbase with all the essential details to help you prepare. This includes a thorough packing list, your itinerary, and access to an app where you can easily keep track of the days and find ideas for optional activities.

If you’ve booked your flights or airport transfer through Travelbase, you’ll be picked up directly at the Kittilä airport by the bus driver and taken to your accommodation, which is about an hour’s drive away. Once you’re there, guides will be available at all times to assist you, and all activities will be led by local guides who are experts in their specific experiences.
